A Christmas Puzzle

“We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy New Year!”
Christmas carol, Unknown

A number of years ago a friend of mine was gifted below porcelain figure at Christmas:

Santa chess TheChessImprover2

Anything chess related that reaches our group of friends, makes its way to me in one form or the other. This one was no exception. I got the picture of it in an email that Christmas day. He was not content just to show it to me. He also wanted me to explain to him what was happening on the chessboard.

How about you giving this a try? Have a look at the image and see what you can figure out. The position on the chessboard holds the main clue for sure. However there are other clues around to help with the answer. I can give you one: by the time this reaches you, Christmas 2021 will be over. It makes perfect sense to see Santa relax by playing a game after his long journey around the World.

I would love to receive your answers between now and the next blog entry. Coincidentally that will be my first in 2022. Until then I thank you for reading my weekly chess musings. Happy New Year!

The player – my first serious chess tournament was back in 1974, a little bit late for today’s standards. Over the years I have had the opportunity to play all forms of chess from OTB to postal, email and server chess. The journey as a player brought me a lot of experience and a few titles along the way: FIDE CM (2012), ICCF IM (2001) and one ICCF SIM norm (2004). The instructor – my career as a chess teacher and coach started in 1994 and continues strong. I have been awarded the FIDE Instructor title (2007) for my work and have been blessed with great students reaching the highest levels (CYCC, NAYCCC, Pan-Am, WYCC). I am very proud of them! See my website for more information. I have developed my own chess curriculum on 6 levels based on my overall chess knowledge and hands-on experience. A glimpse of it can be seen in my first chess app:
