“Believe in yourself. You are braver than you think, more talented than you know, and capable of more than you imagine.”
Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart
Our Provincial Junior Championship returned to in-person play this year. The games were played during the Nov 19-20 weekend. A number of our past and current students played in the top 2 sections out of the 4 available. In the Championship section the best result of a former student was 8th out of 40 players. I was proud to see 2 of my current students finishing top 3 in the Reserve section: Zhengyu won it and Lucas finished third. I asked them to send me their best game of their own choice. Unfortunately I need to remind them again this week.
I was lucky enough to have Walter send over his chosen game. He is one of the ones I am most impressed with and proud of. While he might not be at the top of the class, he has potential and does many little things that matter. Sending his game and solving the homework are just two of them. I am going to share his game as another proof anyone can do good if they do not give up. One of these days he is going to realize how good he can be. Watch out for him then!
White is better out of the opening. Any teacher is proud to see this in his students games.
This is no easy endgame at a certain level. Has Walter got the basics of it after all this time? I will say “Yes” with pride.
