In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov analyzes the second game of the FIDE World Chess Championship Match 2021 between the champion Magnus Carlsen and the challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi.

Carlsen once again deviated from the mainstream lines in the opening stage as he played the sharp Catalan opening. Nepo got a strong outpost for his knight on d3 and also got his other knight to fork Carlsen’s rook and the bishop.

Later, Carlsen gave up the exchange for enough compensation as it was him who got a monstrous knight on d6. Eventually, Nepo gave up his rook for the knight and the game was drawn in a rook endgame with 3 vs 2 pawns on the kingside.
